Wichita, KS – Residents in central Kansas are facing a frigid start to the week, with wind chills dropping to 10-15 below zero. A chance of snow later in the week adds urgency for preparation.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wichita, the coldest wind chills will occur Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, with temperatures hovering near single digits and dipping below zero in some areas. Roads such as I-35 may be hazardous due to the extreme cold and a potential light snowstorm on Thursday night into Friday morning.
Tuesday and Wednesday mornings will see wind chills as low as -15 in cities like Russell, Hutchinson, and Wichita. With actual temperatures ranging from 18-26 on Tuesday and 19-28 on Wednesday, the NWS advises residents to dress in layers and limit outdoor exposure.
Thursday will bring slightly milder temperatures, with highs near 36 degrees, but a storm system moving into the region could bring snow late Thursday night. Accumulations remain uncertain, but early forecasts suggest impacts could extend through Friday. Highs Friday are expected in the low 30s.
Drivers are encouraged to monitor road conditions, especially if traveling along major highways like I-35 or I-70. Frostbite risks will remain high for those exposed to the cold for prolonged periods.
Looking ahead to the weekend, temperatures are expected to moderate, with highs near 34 on Saturday and Sunday. Sunny skies should help thaw icy patches from earlier snow.
