Chicago, IL – A hazardous mix of freezing drizzle and glazed ice is creating treacherous road conditions across northeastern Illinois today. Commuters are urged to use caution and allow extra travel time, especially in Cook, DuPage, and Lake counties.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), freezing drizzle will persist through the morning, leaving a thin glaze of ice on untreated surfaces. The slick conditions are expected to impact major highways, including I-90 and I-294. Drivers should reduce speeds and increase following distances to avoid accidents.
Later today, a band of lake-effect snow is predicted to move through the region, bringing gusty winds and reduced visibility. The heaviest snowfall is expected in parts of Lake County, Illinois, and northern Cook County, with accumulations of up to three inches possible. Evening commutes may be especially dangerous as the snow intensifies.
The frigid temperatures will continue throughout the week. Tuesday’s high is forecasted at 22°F, with lows dipping to 7°F. Lake-effect snow will remain a threat through Thursday, with another round of snow showers expected Friday.
Residents should monitor local forecasts and prepare for delays on untreated roads and sidewalks. Salt crews will be working throughout the area, but icy patches may persist. Officials recommend avoiding travel if possible and checking weather updates frequently.
