Chicago, IL – Dangerous winter weather is impacting Northern Illinois today, with freezing drizzle and lake effect snow creating hazardous travel conditions. Roads, bridges, and overpasses, including Lake Shore Drive, may become slick as snowfall continues through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 p.m. Monday for Lake and Northern Cook counties. Additional snow accumulation of 3 to 4 inches, combined with ice, will make driving difficult. Gusty winds reaching 30 mph are expected to reduce visibility.
Officials urge residents to slow down and use caution on the roads. Pedestrians should also watch for icy stairs and sidewalks, which may lead to injuries. Stay updated on traffic conditions at www.gettingaroundillinois.com.
The winter storm will move out by tonight, with partly cloudy skies expected Tuesday. Highs will reach 28°F but feel colder with continued winds. Snow showers return Wednesday, with an additional 1 to 2 inches forecasted.
Looking ahead, Thursday and Friday bring milder temperatures near 32°F but include chances of freezing rain, especially in the morning. Another system is expected Saturday, possibly bringing heavier snow.
Drivers should keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including blankets and flashlights, and monitor local forecasts for updates. During lake effect snow, visibility can shift rapidly, so be prepared for sudden weather changes.
