Southern Iowa Winter Weather: Snowfall, Hazardous Roads Expected Tonight Along I-80

Des Moines, IA – Snowfall and freezing conditions are set to disrupt travel across southern Iowa this evening, with up to three inches of snow expected in some areas. Drivers along Interstate 80 and surrounding roads should remain alert as low visibility and drifting snow create hazardous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines, intermittent snow will taper off around midnight, with brisk north winds potentially causing blowing snow. Visibility may drop to a quarter mile in heavier bursts, especially in areas south of I-80. Travelers are urged to prepare for slippery roads and allow extra time for travel.

By Monday morning, temperatures are expected to drop to single digits, with wind chills making it feel as low as -5°F. Monday will remain sunny but cold, with a high near 20°F. Light northwest winds should calm by the evening, offering some relief from today’s gusty conditions.

The extended forecast includes partly cloudy skies Tuesday with highs near 20°F, followed by a sunny Wednesday reaching 21°F. Temperatures will warm slightly into the weekend, peaking near 30°F by Friday.

Residents should prepare for potential delays tonight and into Monday morning. It is advised to carry a winter survival kit, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor updated forecasts.
