Louisville, KY – Residents across south-central Kentucky are bracing for dangerous conditions as a major winter storm continues to bring freezing rain, sleet, and snow through Monday evening. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect, with hazardous ice accumulation expected to disrupt travel and cause scattered power outages.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain will intensify tonight, transitioning into sleet and snow by early Monday. Precipitation totals of up to one inch of ice and an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow are forecast. Roads, including major routes like I-65 and I-64, are expected to become treacherous, with visibility reduced and ice likely to impact bridges and overpasses.
Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and use extreme caution if commuting is unavoidable. Officials recommend preparing for power outages by charging devices, stocking flashlights, and keeping extra blankets on hand.
Monday’s forecast includes lingering snow showers with a high near 30 degrees and gusts up to 25 mph. Conditions will gradually improve Monday night as skies clear and temperatures drop to 15 degrees. However, refreezing on roadways remains a concern.
The extended outlook brings calmer but frigid weather, with highs near 24 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight lows will dip into the single digits, further complicating recovery efforts.
Residents are advised to stay updated on weather alerts and road conditions throughout the week. Check local forecasts frequently, and avoid walking or driving on ice-covered surfaces when possible.
