Traffic Alert: I-70 Shut Down After Major Crash in Eastern Illinois

Greenup, IL – A multi-vehicle crash has shut down Interstate 70 in both directions near Greenup, creating significant traffic delays.

According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), the crash occurred near milepost 124 early Sunday. Eastbound and westbound lanes are closed, and traffic is being rerouted to U.S. Route 40. Officials have warned drivers to expect delays and avoid the area if possible.

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) confirmed on social media that the closure could last for several hours. Motorists traveling through the region are urged to plan alternate routes and exercise caution.

ISP Troop 9 units remain on the scene, investigating the cause of the crash and coordinating traffic management. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Drivers using Route 40 should be aware of increased congestion as detours remain in place. Officials remind travelers to stay updated on road conditions by checking IDOT’s website or social media channels.
