Missouri Drivers Warned to Stay Off Roads During Winter Storm

Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is urging residents to avoid travel as most state roads are covered in snow and ice. Bitter cold temperatures, drifting snow, and freezing precipitation have created dangerous conditions across the state.

According to MoDOT’s 5 p.m. update Sunday, many major highways are either fully or partially covered. Interstate routes including I-70 and I-44 remain hazardous, with road crews working around the clock to clear pathways. Cleanup efforts are slowed by subfreezing temperatures, making salt and other treatments less effective.

The agency advises residents to stay home Monday as conditions are expected to remain treacherous. Travelers needing updates can visit traveler.modot.org for real-time road conditions and closures.

MoDOT emphasizes that even cleared roads can be slippery. “If you must drive, do so cautiously,” a MoDOT spokesperson said.

Residents are encouraged to stock emergency kits, monitor weather updates, and avoid unnecessary trips. With temperatures expected to remain below freezing, conditions are unlikely to improve quickly.
