Champaign, IL – Roadways across central and southern Illinois, including I-57, are treacherous tonight as snow and ice blanket the region. The Illinois Department of Transportation reports that much of I-57 and surrounding highways are mostly covered with snow and ice, making travel extremely dangerous.
Drivers on I-57 from Champaign to Effingham and beyond are encountering reduced visibility due to blowing snow, with wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph. These conditions are contributing to icy patches, particularly on bridges and overpasses, which are prone to freezing. Additional snow is expected to accumulate overnight, further worsening conditions into Monday morning.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the area, calling for 2 to 5 inches of snow overnight. North winds are expected to persist, creating blowing snow and significantly reducing visibility. Temperatures will hover around 20 degrees, with wind chills dropping into the teens.
IDOT advises travelers to avoid unnecessary trips tonight. Those who must drive should reduce speed, allow extra stopping distance, and check road conditions before heading out. Drivers are encouraged to use caution on I-57 and other major routes, including I-72 and U.S. 45, where conditions remain poor.
Looking ahead, cold temperatures will keep icy conditions in place throughout Monday, with bitterly cold wind chills persisting through midweek. Crews will continue treating roads, but travelers should expect delays and plan accordingly.
