Fairfield, IL – Southern Illinois and parts of southwest Indiana are under a Winter Storm Warning through Monday afternoon, with freezing rain and snow creating dangerous conditions. Significant ice accumulation and gusty winds may lead to widespread power outages and hazardous roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, KY, the storm will bring a mix of sleet and freezing rain, followed by snow late tonight into Monday morning. Areas could see 1 to 3 inches of snow and up to a quarter-inch of ice accumulation. Gusts up to 30 mph are expected, further complicating conditions.

Residents are advised to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. If driving is unavoidable, keep an emergency kit in your vehicle, including food, water, and a flashlight. Local authorities warn that ice-coated roads and reduced visibility may make commutes nearly impossible, especially on rural routes.

An arctic blast following the storm will send wind chill values plunging to single digits or below zero throughout the week. Residents without power are urged to seek warm shelter immediately to avoid prolonged exposure.

To stay safe, avoid downed power lines, monitor local weather updates, and report outages to utility companies. For the latest road conditions, visit www.weather.gov/pah/roads.

Prepare now by charging devices, gathering supplies, and securing outdoor items. Officials remind residents to check on neighbors, particularly the elderly or those without heat.
