Bloomington, IN – A winter storm warning remains in effect for southwest Indiana, with heavy snow and icy conditions expected to persist through 7 p.m. Monday. Residents are urged to prepare for hazardous travel and potential power outages as the storm intensifies.

According to the National Weather Service, snow accumulations are forecasted to range between 6 and 11 inches, with the highest totals in areas such as Bloomington, Columbus, and Seymour. Ice accumulations could reach up to one-tenth of an inch, exacerbating the risk of downed power lines and tree limbs. Winds gusting up to 35 mph may create near-zero visibility at times, making travel treacherous.

Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and hazardous throughout Monday. Officials strongly recommend delaying all nonessential travel. If driving is unavoidable, motorists should equip their vehicles with a winter storm kit, including flashlights, food, blankets, and water. Drivers are also urged to use extreme caution, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid sudden braking or acceleration.

As the storm begins to taper off Monday evening, temperatures are expected to remain below freezing, potentially leaving roadways icy into Tuesday. Residents should stay updated on local weather and road conditions by calling 511 or visiting the Indiana Department of Transportation’s website.

Emergency officials emphasize preparedness, reminding residents to have backup power supplies, fully charged phones, and adequate heating. This winter storm poses a serious threat, and taking precautions now can prevent dangerous situations later.
