Garrett County, MD – A significant winter storm is set to impact Maryland’s western regions starting late Sunday evening, with snowfall accumulations of up to 18 inches expected in some areas. Residents are urged to prepare for treacherous road conditions and potential travel delays.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Winter Storm Warning will be in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Tuesday. The heaviest snowfall is expected between midnight and mid-morning Monday, with rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour. In addition to snow, freezing rain and sleet may cause additional hazards Monday afternoon.
Travelers should avoid non-essential trips during the storm, as untreated roads will quickly become impassable. Even major routes, including U.S. 219 and I-68, may experience closures or delays. Officials recommend keeping an emergency kit in vehicles, including food, water, and flashlights, in case of unexpected delays.
A second wave of heavy snow is anticipated Monday evening, creating further challenges for the Monday evening commute. Those with essential travel plans should check local road conditions via 511 and leave ample time to reach destinations.
The five-day outlook shows the storm easing by Tuesday morning, followed by frigid temperatures through Wednesday. Highs in Garrett County are expected to remain below freezing, with potential for icy conditions to linger.
