Garrett County, MD – A major winter storm is set to blanket Maryland’s western regions with snowfall rates reaching up to 3 inches per hour at times. Residents are urged to prepare for hazardous travel conditions and widespread disruptions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Winter Storm Warning will remain in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday through 6 a.m. Tuesday. The storm is expected to bring rapid snowfall late tonight and into Monday morning, with accumulations reaching as much as 18 inches in higher elevations of the Potomac Highlands.

Road conditions will quickly deteriorate, especially during periods of intense snowfall. Untreated roads, including major routes like U.S. 219 and I-68, may become impassable. Officials advise against non-essential travel. Those who must drive should equip their vehicles with emergency supplies, including water, food, and flashlights.

After a brief lull in precipitation Monday afternoon, a second wave of heavy snow is expected Monday evening, further complicating travel and cleanup efforts. Freezing rain and sleet may also mix with snow during the day, increasing the risk of ice buildup.

The storm will taper off early Tuesday, but freezing temperatures are forecasted to persist, causing icy conditions to linger on untreated roads and sidewalks through midweek.

Stay informed by monitoring the latest updates from the National Weather Service and local officials. Travelers can check road conditions through Maryland’s 511 system.
