Richmond, VA – A major winter storm is set to impact central and eastern Virginia through early Tuesday morning, bringing heavy snow, ice, and high winds to the region. Residents are urged to take precautions as travel conditions are expected to become hazardous.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday through 7 a.m. Tuesday. Snowfall totals are predicted to range from 2 to 7 inches depending on location, with the highest amounts in northern areas like Louisa County and the Northern Neck. Ice accumulations up to 0.2 inches are also possible, making roadways treacherous. Gusty winds up to 40 mph may lead to reduced visibility and scattered power outages.

Officials warn commuters to plan ahead, as snow and ice are expected to significantly affect Monday’s morning and evening travel. Residents should avoid non-essential travel, but those who must drive should keep an emergency kit, including food, water, and a flashlight, in their vehicle.

By Tuesday morning, the storm will begin to taper off, but lingering snow and ice could keep some roads slippery. Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing until mid-week, delaying cleanup efforts. Road crews will be working around the clock to treat major highways, including I-95 and local routes.
