Blacksburg, VA – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for portions of North Carolina and central Virginia until 7 p.m. Monday, as a powerful storm brings a mix of snow, sleet, and ice to the region. Travel is expected to be dangerous through Monday evening, with significant impacts to power and roadways.

The National Weather Service reports that snow and sleet accumulations could reach up to 4 inches, with ice forming layers as thick as a half-inch in some areas. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph are also anticipated, increasing the likelihood of downed trees and power lines. Commuters on I-81, I-77, and local highways should prepare for slick roads and potential closures due to fallen debris.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve. For those who must be on the road, officials recommend carrying an emergency kit with a flashlight, food, and water. According to Duke Energy, thousands could lose power during the storm, and restoration efforts may be delayed due to icy conditions.

The storm’s effects are expected to taper off Monday night as temperatures begin to rise slightly. However, lingering icy patches may continue to impact travel into Tuesday morning.

Authorities emphasize the importance of reporting downed power lines immediately and remind residents to avoid touching or moving them. Keep mobile devices charged and follow local emergency alerts for updates.

For real-time road conditions in North Carolina and Virginia, call 511 or check state transportation websites.
