Salt Lake City, UT – Utah residents are bracing for a significant winter storm expected to deliver up to 20 inches of snow in mountainous areas, with snowfall rates reaching 3 inches per hour at times, prompting multiple Winter Weather Advisories.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the advisories cover areas including the Wasatch and Uinta Mountains, Wasatch Back, Central Mountains, and Northern Wasatch Front. Mountain regions such as the Cottonwoods could see the heaviest accumulation, while valley areas may receive up to 2 inches.
The storm’s peak intensity is forecast for Saturday morning, with heavy snow from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. during which snowfall rates could range between 1 and 3 inches per hour. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are expected to cause blowing snow, reducing visibility and making travel hazardous.
Drivers are urged to use caution, particularly in areas where traction laws may be enacted. Up-to-date road conditions can be found at UDOT Traffic. Snow is anticipated to taper off Saturday evening.
Prepare for challenging travel conditions as this powerful winter system moves through the region.
