Albuquerque, NM – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for large portions of New Mexico, including the Middle Rio Grande Valley, East Central Plains, and other areas. The warning is in effect Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. due to conditions conducive to rapid fire spread.
According to the National Weather Service, a storm system moving across the central Rockies is bringing dry and unseasonably warm air, combined with strong winds gusting up to 50 mph. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 7%, further increasing the risk. Areas affected include the Northeast Plains, Sandia and Manzano Mountains, and the Central Highlands.
Officials warn that any fires that develop in these conditions could spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Winds are expected to shift northwest by evening as a Pacific cold front passes through, slightly improving conditions after sunset.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take precautions to prevent wildfires. Local fire departments and emergency services have been alerted to the heightened risk.
