Hastings, NE – A powerful winter storm is expected to bring freezing rain, blowing snow, and icy roads to Nebraska this weekend. The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning for the region, cautioning residents about hazardous travel conditions, especially along Highway 6.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing drizzle is forecasted to begin Saturday morning and transition to snow Saturday night. Ice accumulation of up to 0.1 inches is possible during the day, creating slippery conditions on untreated roads. By Sunday, heavy snowfall between 2 to 13 inches is expected, with the heaviest accumulation likely in southeastern Nebraska.
Strong winds between 25 and 35 mph will worsen visibility and create blowing snow, particularly Sunday morning. Temperatures will remain bitterly cold, with wind chills dropping as low as -11°F Sunday night. Travel is strongly discouraged during peak storm hours due to potential whiteout conditions.
By Monday, the weather will stabilize with mostly sunny skies and highs near 15°F, though overnight lows will stay in the single digits.
Residents should prepare by stocking essential supplies and ensuring vehicles are winter-ready. Avoid unnecessary travel, and check local updates for road closures or changing conditions. For those needing to travel, ensure your vehicle is equipped with emergency supplies.
