Illinois Ice Storm Warning: Hazardous Roads Expected Along I-57 Starting Sunday

Harrisburg, IL – Southern Illinois residents are urged to prepare for dangerous conditions as a major ice storm is set to impact the region from early Sunday through Monday morning. The National Weather Service has issued an Ice Storm Warning, predicting significant ice accumulations of up to three-quarters of an inch and hazardous travel along key roadways, including I-57.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm will begin Sunday at 2 a.m. and continue through 6 a.m. Monday. Residents should prepare for slick roads, particularly on bridges and overpasses, as well as widespread power outages due to ice-laden power lines and tree limbs. The storm is expected to cause travel disruptions, with some roads becoming impassable.

In addition to the ice, an arctic blast will arrive Monday, plunging temperatures to single digits and producing subzero wind chills. These conditions will make power outages even more dangerous. Residents are encouraged to stock up on essentials, such as food, water, and batteries, and to avoid unnecessary travel.

Travelers on I-57 and surrounding roads are advised to delay trips or proceed with extreme caution. Emergency kits, including flashlights, blankets, and non-perishable food, are strongly recommended for those who must drive.
