Jackson, KY – A significant winter storm is set to impact eastern Kentucky beginning Sunday morning, bringing heavy snow, freezing rain, and dangerously cold temperatures. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning for areas north of I-80, effective from Sunday through Tuesday morning.
According to the NWS in Jackson, the storm is expected to bring snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, with localized areas seeing even higher totals. Freezing rain will develop late Sunday night, creating hazardous travel conditions, especially along I-80 and surrounding roads. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for possible power outages due to ice accumulation on power lines.
Temperatures will drop sharply following the storm, with wind chills expected to fall below zero by Thursday. Forecasters warn this could lead to frostbite and hypothermia for those spending prolonged periods outdoors. Residents are urged to check heating systems and stock up on essentials before the storm arrives.
The extended forecast shows continued cold conditions into midweek, with highs barely reaching the 30s and lows dropping into the teens. Light snow may linger Monday, but skies are expected to clear slightly by Tuesday, offering some relief from the storm.
Motorists are advised to monitor updates from local authorities and the NWS for real-time road conditions and weather alerts. If you must travel, keep an emergency kit with blankets, water, and a flashlight in your vehicle.
