Richmond, VA – A winter storm is forecast to bring heavy snow, sleet, and ice to Virginia starting Sunday night. Hazardous conditions are expected to impact major roadways, including I-95, into Monday.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for central and northern Virginia, stretching into Maryland and West Virginia, from Sunday evening through late Monday night. Snowfall totals of 5 inches or more are possible, with some areas receiving up to 10 inches. Ice accumulations could make travel dangerous.
Residents are urged to prepare now by monitoring forecasts and limiting non-essential travel. Power outages are also a concern, as the combination of snow and freezing rain may cause tree limbs to fall. The Monday morning commute is likely to be severely affected.
On Sunday, clouds will increase as temperatures rise to a high of 35°F. Snow is expected to begin overnight, with sleet and freezing rain likely into Monday. By Monday afternoon, snow may taper off, but slick roads and icy conditions could persist into Monday night.
The rest of the week will bring calmer weather, with sunny skies on Tuesday and highs near 30°F. Nighttime lows will remain frigid, dipping into the teens.
Stay tuned for updates as the storm approaches and check road conditions before traveling.
