Portland, OR – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for the Oregon and Washington Cascades through Sunday morning, with snow accumulation expected to reach up to 15 inches in higher elevations. Travelers and outdoor enthusiasts should prepare for hazardous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, snow levels are forecast to drop to 4,000 feet Saturday afternoon, with the heaviest snowfall occurring overnight. Roads across mountain passes, including Government Camp and Santiam Pass, are expected to become slick and dangerous. Drivers should carry chains, blankets, and emergency supplies if venturing into the affected areas.

The advisory also impacts popular destinations like Mt. St. Helens, Willamette Pass, and Larch Mountain, where snow accumulation between 3 to 8 inches is likely, with higher totals above 5,000 feet. The snow could make walking surfaces slippery, so extra caution is advised for hikers and residents in these areas.

Sunday morning conditions will see continued snow but tapering off by late morning. Drivers should check road conditions on Oregon’s TripCheck.com or Washington’s WSDOT site for updated travel information and chain restrictions.

As the five-day forecast unfolds, temperatures in Portland are expected to hover in the 40s, with occasional rain showers extending into midweek. However, snowfall will persist in the mountains, making winter sports activities possible but potentially treacherous.

Stay alert for updates as conditions evolve, and avoid unnecessary travel through mountain passes this weekend.
