Baltimore, MD – A significant winter storm is forecast to bring heavy snow and ice to the Baltimore area starting Sunday evening. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch effective from late Sunday through Monday night, warning of potentially hazardous travel conditions and widespread disruptions.
According to the NWS, snowfall accumulations of 5 to 10 inches are expected, with localized higher amounts possible. Freezing rain could add ice accumulations of up to a quarter inch, making roads especially treacherous. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility.
Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel starting Sunday night, as conditions are expected to worsen into Monday morning. Those commuting Monday are urged to prepare for significant delays and slippery roads. Major roadways like I-95 and the Baltimore Beltway are likely to see hazardous conditions.
The storm is also expected to disrupt power in some areas due to ice accumulation and gusty winds. Officials recommend securing outdoor items and having emergency supplies on hand, including flashlights, batteries, and extra blankets.
Temperatures are predicted to remain near freezing through the storm, with snow showers tapering off Monday night. The rest of the week looks clearer, but cold temperatures will persist.
