Columbia, SC – A storm system is forecasted to bring rain and gusty winds to Columbia on Sunday night, followed by a drop in temperatures. The National Weather Service (NWS) advises residents to prepare for strong winds and showers as early as Sunday evening, with the heaviest rain expected by Monday morning.
According to the NWS, temperatures will briefly rise ahead of the storm, reaching the low 50s Sunday afternoon before sharply dropping behind the cold front. Winds could gust up to 25 mph, potentially impacting travel along I-20 and local roadways. Drivers are encouraged to use caution, particularly during the Monday morning commute when wet roads and reduced visibility are likely.
The storm system will clear by Monday night, leaving mostly clear skies and lows near 27 degrees. The cold air mass behind the front will linger, with daytime highs staying in the upper 40s through midweek. By Tuesday night, temperatures are forecasted to dip into the low 20s, marking one of the coldest nights of the season.
Residents should secure outdoor items before Sunday evening and monitor local forecasts for updates. This week’s dry weather following the storm will allow time for roads to clear, but layers will be essential for those spending time outdoors in frigid conditions.
Stay tuned for further updates from the National Weather Service, and always prioritize safety during severe weather events.
