Des Moines, IA – A winter storm is set to blanket southern Iowa tonight, bringing up to 8 inches of snow in some areas. Travel disruptions are likely as the heaviest snowfall targets counties along the Missouri border, including Decatur, Ringgold, and Taylor. Winds gusting up to 35 mph could worsen conditions by creating blowing and drifting snow.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall will begin late Saturday evening and continue through Sunday, tapering off by early Monday morning. The highest accumulations are expected in the southern parts of these counties. Northern sections may see significantly less due to the storm’s sharp gradient. Motorists are urged to check the Iowa 511 app or dial 511 for real-time road conditions and avoid unnecessary travel.

Detailed Forecast:

Tonight: Snow begins after 9 p.m., with accumulations of 4–8 inches and winds reaching 20 mph. Expect visibility to drop and roads to become hazardous.

Sunday: Snow continues, primarily in the morning, with lingering flurries through the evening. Temperatures will hover around 17°F, with gusts up to 24 mph adding to the wind chill.

Monday: Mostly sunny but cold, with a high near 19°F. Remaining snow could lead to slick spots on untreated surfaces.

Tuesday: Partly sunny with a high of 19°F. Overnight lows near 3°F.

Wednesday: Highs around 15°F under mostly sunny skies.

The NWS recommends keeping emergency supplies in vehicles if travel is unavoidable and monitoring updates as storm tracks may shift. Southern Iowa residents should prepare for challenging conditions, especially on major roadways like U.S. Highway 69 and Interstate 35.
