Athens, OH – Southeastern Ohio is bracing for a significant winter storm, with snow, ice, and hazardous conditions forecast from Sunday morning through Monday evening. Residents should prepare for widespread travel disruptions and potential power outages.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 a.m. Sunday to 7 p.m. Monday. Forecasters expect snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches, combined with ice accumulations of up to a quarter-inch. Bridges and overpasses will freeze quickly, creating treacherous travel conditions. Power lines and tree limbs may also be damaged by heavy ice, leading to outages that could last for days in some areas.
Stay Safe:
Travel during the storm is strongly discouraged. If driving is unavoidable, pack emergency supplies such as food, water, and a flashlight in your vehicle. Check road conditions before heading out by calling 511 or visiting state transportation websites.
The hardest-hit areas include Athens, Jackson, and Gallia counties. Residents are urged to prepare their homes for extended outages by charging devices, gathering non-perishable food, and securing backup heat sources.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to remain below freezing through midweek, delaying road recovery. Flurries may persist into Tuesday, keeping conditions slick. By Wednesday, partial clearing is expected, with daytime highs climbing into the mid-30s.
Stay informed through updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management. Monitor the storm’s progress and prepare for disruptions to daily routines.
