Richmond, VA – Governor Glenn Youngkin declared a state of emergency Friday ahead of a significant winter storm expected to hit Virginia. The storm, set to begin Sunday, could bring snow, freezing rain, and hazardous travel conditions statewide.
The National Weather Service predicts snowfall and ice accumulation, with the heaviest impacts Sunday afternoon through Monday. Temperatures may remain below freezing well into next week, adding to the challenges.
According to state officials, crews are pre-treating roads, while additional emergency personnel are on standby. The Virginia Department of Transportation urged travelers to adjust plans and avoid non-essential travel. For real-time updates, residents can use the 511 Virginia mobile app.
Governor Youngkin advised residents to stock up on essential supplies and monitor weather alerts. “Safety is the top priority,” he said, encouraging everyone to stay off roads during the storm.
Residents should prepare vehicles with emergency kits, including blankets, water, and flashlights. Officials also warned against using gas-powered devices indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.
