Winter Storm Warning: Central Kansas to See Up to 16 Inches of Snow and Severe Ice Accumulation

Wichita, KS – A major winter storm is set to impact central and northeast Kansas this weekend, bringing freezing rain, snow, and dangerously low wind chills.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the storm will begin early Saturday with freezing drizzle. Precipitation will intensify Saturday evening, transitioning into a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Areas along Highway 400 and Interstate 70 are expected to see the heaviest accumulations, with snow totals reaching up to 16 inches in some locations.

Blizzard conditions may develop late Saturday into Sunday due to strong winds and drifting snow. Temperatures are forecast to drop drastically, with wind chills between -5°F and -15°F Monday morning. Hazardous travel is likely throughout the weekend, especially north of Highway 400.

Local officials are urging residents to prepare for power outages and avoid unnecessary travel. Updated forecasts will be available by 5 a.m. Saturday.
