Great Falls, MT – A powerful winter storm is bearing down on Montana’s mountain ranges, promising significant snowfall and hazardous conditions through Saturday evening. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Little Belt, Highwood, and Snowy Mountains, with 5 to 10 inches of snow expected.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning remains in effect until 5 p.m. Saturday. The heaviest snowfall will occur today, particularly in higher elevations and along mountain passes, including Deep Creek Pass and Kings Hill Pass. Travelers are urged to carry emergency supplies and check road conditions before heading out.
Wind gusts may create additional challenges, leading to areas of blowing snow and reduced visibility. Tire chains could be necessary for some vehicles navigating steep or icy sections. Officials recommend using Montana’s 511 road report system for the latest travel updates.
The storm is expected to taper off late Saturday evening, but cold temperatures and slick roads could persist into Sunday. Residents and visitors are encouraged to limit non-essential travel and prepare for possible delays.
Looking ahead, calmer weather is forecast for early next week, with temperatures slowly rising as the storm system moves eastward.
