Garrett County, MD – Heavy snow and gusting winds are sweeping through Garrett County and surrounding areas, creating treacherous travel conditions through Saturday morning. Forecasters predict up to 10 inches of snow and wind gusts reaching 50 mph, prompting safety warnings for residents.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm will intensify Friday night, with snow squalls reducing visibility to near-zero in higher elevations. Major routes, including Interstate 68 and US-40, are expected to see whiteout conditions, making travel dangerous and potentially life-threatening.

Residents are urged to stay indoors, as the storm could lead to downed power lines and sporadic outages. If you must travel, ensure your vehicle is equipped with emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water.

The storm will begin tapering off by late Saturday morning, but snow-covered roads and frigid temperatures will remain a concern. Drivers should monitor local road conditions by dialing 511 for updates.

Looking ahead, the five-day forecast predicts a brief clearing on Sunday before another cold front moves in early next week, bringing a chance of light snow and temperatures dipping into the teens.

Stay informed by checking local weather alerts and limiting travel during hazardous conditions. For those venturing outside, dress in layers and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite.
