Chicago, IL – Illinois State Police (ISP) reported two squad cars struck by drivers in DuPage and Cook counties within two days. Both incidents involved drivers failing to comply with Illinois’ Move Over Law.
The first crash occurred on December 31 near Woodward Avenue on I-55. A 23-year-old Lockport woman rear-ended a parked squad car with its emergency lights activated. No injuries were reported, but the driver was charged with driving too fast for conditions.
The second crash took place early January 1 on I-57 near 107th Street. Two ISP troopers were responding to a separate accident when a driver struck their vehicles. The driver, a 34-year-old from Matteson, was hospitalized and charged with a Scott’s Law violation.
ISP emphasizes that the Move Over Law requires drivers to reduce speed and change lanes when approaching emergency vehicles. In 2024, the ISP recorded 27 related crashes, including one fatality.
Officials urge drivers to prioritize safety and follow the law. Fines for violations start at $250.
