Jackson, MS – Central Mississippi faces a weekend of turbulent weather as severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and dangerously cold temperatures are expected starting Sunday. Residents along Interstate 55 should prepare for damaging wind gusts and a sharp drop in temperatures early next week.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms is in place for Sunday afternoon and evening. These storms could bring wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes. Drivers should exercise caution on I-55 and avoid travel during the height of the storms.
In addition, strong winds between 20 and 40 mph are forecast for much of Sunday, with gusts capable of toppling tree limbs and creating hazardous conditions for high-profile vehicles. As temperatures plummet late Monday into Tuesday, wind chills as low as 15°F are anticipated, particularly near the Highway 82 corridor. Hypothermia is a risk for those exposed to the cold for prolonged periods, and sensitive outdoor vegetation could be at risk.
The five-day forecast shows unsettled conditions through Sunday night, with up to an inch of rain possible. Monday and Tuesday will bring calmer, sunnier weather but significantly colder air. Highs will reach only 40°F, and lows could dip into the mid-20s.
Residents should secure loose objects outdoors, avoid parking near trees, and monitor local forecasts for updates. Those traveling should pack emergency supplies and prepare for potential delays. Stay informed by checking updates on the National Weather Service website or social media channels.
