Memphis, TN – A flash freeze is expected to hit Memphis late Sunday night, creating hazardous conditions for drivers across the area. Heavy rain will soak the region throughout Sunday before temperatures drop sharply into the 20s overnight. The sudden freeze may cause black ice on roadways, including I-40 and I-240, creating dangerous driving conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Memphis, rainfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches before cold air sweeps in Sunday evening. The rapid drop in temperatures will likely freeze residual water on roads, leading to slick conditions by early Monday morning. Officials are urging residents to monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel late Sunday and early Monday.
Saturday will bring dry conditions, with sunny skies and a high near 45°F. Rain begins Saturday night, increasing into Sunday morning, with possible thunderstorms. Sunday’s high will reach 61°F before temperatures plummet after sunset. By Monday, highs will struggle to reach 33°F, with wind gusts making it feel even colder.
Travelers are advised to prepare for delays and exercise caution, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and less-traveled roads that are more prone to freezing. Keep an emergency kit in your car and plan routes carefully to avoid potentially icy areas.
Looking ahead, the weather will stabilize midweek, with sunny skies and highs in the low 30s expected Tuesday through Thursday.
