Kansas Winter Storm Watch: Up to 10 Inches of Snow Expected Starting Saturday

Wichita, KS – A major winter storm is set to hit Kansas this weekend, bringing up to 10 inches of snow and significant ice accumulation. The National Weather Service predicts hazardous road conditions, power outages, and treacherous travel from Saturday morning through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, freezing rain is expected to begin Saturday morning, transitioning into heavy snow late Saturday night into Sunday. Areas around Salina, Topeka, and Wichita have a 70–90% probability of receiving at least four inches of snow, with some areas possibly seeing totals near 10 inches. Ice accumulation up to a quarter inch is also forecast, especially in south-central Kansas.

High winds, gusting up to 45 mph, will further complicate conditions, creating blowing snow and reduced visibility. Power lines and trees are vulnerable to damage due to heavy ice and wind. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items, and prepare for potential power outages by stocking emergency supplies.

Temperatures will drop sharply as the storm moves through. Highs on Saturday will hover around 36°F before plummeting to the teens by Sunday, with wind chills near zero. Monday and Tuesday will remain frigid, with highs reaching only the low 20s.

Those traveling on major roads like I-70 and US-54 should expect delays and hazardous conditions. Local officials encourage residents to check updated forecasts regularly and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
