Kansas City, MO — A significant winter storm is expected to impact northeast Kansas and northern Missouri starting Saturday afternoon, bringing hazardous weather conditions through late Sunday. Up to 13 inches of snow, sleet, and freezing rain may accumulate, creating dangerous travel conditions on major roadways, including Highway 50 and I-70.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, freezing rain will develop Saturday evening south of Highway 50, transitioning to snow by Sunday afternoon. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, further complicating travel and increasing the risk of power outages. Residents should plan ahead and avoid unnecessary travel.
Saturday’s high is expected to reach 28°F with freezing rain beginning after 3 p.m. By Saturday night, sleet and snow are forecast to intensify as temperatures drop to 20°F. Sunday will bring heavy snow throughout the day with a high near 23°F and continued strong winds.
The storm is likely to disrupt travel along I-70, Highway 50, and Highway 36, with conditions potentially becoming impassable in some areas. The heaviest snow is anticipated in northern Missouri, but precise snowfall totals remain uncertain.
Looking ahead, temperatures will plummet further on Monday, with highs only reaching 13°F. Overnight lows Monday and Tuesday could drop below zero, with wind chills making it feel even colder.
Residents are urged to monitor the latest weather updates and prepare emergency kits with food, water, and flashlights. Ensure vehicles are equipped for icy conditions and stay indoors whenever possible.
