Paducah, KY – Western Kentucky is bracing for a major winter storm expected to begin Saturday night and continue through Sunday. Freezing rain, sleet, and snow are forecast to impact Paducah and surrounding areas, with significant ice accumulation likely.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, freezing rain is expected to begin after midnight Saturday, transitioning into a wintry mix of sleet and snow by Sunday morning. Ice accumulations of up to a quarter-inch are possible, particularly along Interstate 24, creating hazardous travel conditions. Temperatures will range from the upper 20s to low 40s, but freezing conditions are expected to linger, especially in shaded areas.
Officials warn residents to limit travel during peak storm hours and prepare for potential power outages caused by ice-laden tree limbs and utility lines. Road crews are on standby, but icy patches could develop quickly, especially on bridges and overpasses. Drivers are urged to use caution and carry an emergency kit in their vehicles.
The winter storm will ease late Sunday night, with rain tapering off. However, temperatures will drop into the low 20s overnight, causing any remaining precipitation to freeze. Monday is expected to be mostly cloudy with a high near 30, offering little relief from icy conditions.
Looking ahead, temperatures will remain cold through midweek, with partly sunny skies on Tuesday and highs in the upper 20s. Northwest winds will persist, keeping wind chills low.
