Dry Cold Front and 45 MPH Winds Expected Saturday Across North Carolina’s Outer Banks

Newport, NC — A dry cold front moving into the Outer Banks will bring high winds and coastal flooding this weekend, according to the National Weather Service. Residents of Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands should prepare for inundation of up to 2 feet above ground level, starting Friday evening and continuing through Saturday morning.

A Coastal Flood Advisory and Wind Advisory are in effect, with northwest winds expected to reach 35-45 mph. Hazardous marine conditions will begin Friday afternoon and persist through Monday. Those living in low-lying areas are advised to secure property and avoid non-essential travel during peak flooding times.

The five-day forecast for Newport includes partly sunny skies Friday, with a high near 51°F. Tonight will be mostly clear, with temperatures dropping to 29°F. Saturday will remain sunny but chilly, with highs near 40°F and gusts reaching 26 mph. By Sunday, temperatures will rise slightly to 46°F, but rain chances increase overnight.

Showers are likely Monday, with breezy conditions and highs near 61°F. By Tuesday, temperatures will drop to 41°F, with mostly sunny skies.

Drivers are urged to monitor road conditions, especially along NC Highway 12, which often experiences flooding during high wind events. Mariners are advised to avoid the waters near Hatteras and Ocracoke as hazardous seas develop.
