Hastings, NE – South-central Nebraska is bracing for freezing drizzle, heavy snow, and bitterly cold temperatures this weekend as a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening. Residents should prepare for hazardous travel conditions, especially along I-70, and make necessary safety preparations.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), freezing drizzle will develop Saturday morning and transition to snow by Saturday evening. Accumulations of 5 to 10 inches of snow are possible in some areas, particularly southeast of Hastings. Roads and bridges could become slick, with visibility dropping to a quarter mile at times due to blowing snow.

The heaviest snow rates are expected late Saturday night into early Sunday, accompanied by gusty north winds up to 35 mph. Temperatures will plummet Sunday night, with wind chills dropping below zero.

Motorists should delay travel if possible. If travel is unavoidable, carry a winter survival kit including water, blankets, and a flashlight. The NWS advises checking road conditions before leaving home.

Beyond the weekend, Monday will bring partly cloudy skies and a high near 12°F, followed by a gradual warming trend midweek. By Wednesday, highs will reach the upper teens, with sunny skies expected.

Stay informed with the latest updates from the National Weather Service, and plan ahead for potentially hazardous weather.
