Fort Wayne, IN – Lake-effect snow showers will persist across northern Indiana and southern Michigan today, creating slick road conditions and hazardous travel on major routes, including US-24 and US-6. Temperatures will plummet, with daytime highs hovering between 24 and 29 degrees Friday and dipping to as low as 11 overnight.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Northern Indiana, drivers should prepare for up to 2 inches of snowfall today and into early Saturday morning. The heaviest snowfall is expected in southern Michigan, with reduced visibility likely during bursts of snow. Roadways may become treacherous, especially overnight as temperatures fall further and roads refreeze.
Saturday will bring a slight reprieve as snow showers taper off by late morning. However, colder air will settle over the region, keeping daytime highs between 21 and 25 degrees. Winds out of the northwest could exacerbate the cold, producing wind chills in the teens.
The NWS has also issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the weekend, warning of additional snow accumulations late Sunday and into Monday. Early projections suggest central and southern Indiana may face a more significant winter storm at the start of next week.
Residents are urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel, especially on untreated surfaces. Avoid unnecessary trips during heavy snowfall and ensure your vehicle is equipped for winter conditions.
