Central Indiana to See Snow Friday Morning: Prepare for Weekend Winter Storm

Indianapolis, IN – Light snow is expected to impact central Indiana tonight, creating slick conditions along major roadways, including I-74. Drivers are urged to exercise caution as untreated surfaces could become icy overnight.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snow will begin after 6 p.m. Thursday, with totals of 1 to 2 inches likely north of I-74 and lesser amounts to the south. This light snowfall will taper off by early Friday morning, but roads and overpasses may remain hazardous. Motorists should plan for extra travel time during the Friday morning commute.

Friday is expected to be mostly sunny, with highs near 26°F. However, colder temperatures will return Friday night, dipping to around 13°F. These conditions set the stage for a significant winter storm arriving Sunday into Monday.

The NWS has issued a Winter Storm Watch for central Indiana, warning of heavy snow and potential accumulations exceeding 6 inches. The storm may also bring sleet and freezing rain to southern parts of the state. Hazardous travel conditions are expected Sunday through Monday, particularly along I-74 and other major routes.

Residents should prepare now by checking vehicles for winter readiness and stocking emergency supplies, such as blankets, food, and flashlights. Those traveling should monitor updated forecasts and avoid unnecessary trips during the storm.
