Springfield, MO – A significant winter storm will move through Missouri this weekend, bringing freezing rain, sleet, and snow to Springfield starting Saturday night. Residents should prepare for hazardous travel conditions and subzero wind chills early next week.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Springfield, a mix of rain, freezing rain, and snow is expected late Saturday into early Monday. The system could cause icy roads on highways such as I-44 and Route 65, creating dangerous driving conditions. Forecasts suggest moderate travel impacts north and east of Springfield, with minor disruptions elsewhere.
Rain will begin Saturday night before transitioning to freezing rain and snow Sunday. High temperatures Sunday will hover near 39°F, but gusty winds and rapidly falling temperatures could turn wet roads into icy hazards overnight. By Monday morning, lows are expected to dip into the single digits, with wind chills plunging as low as -5°F.
The NWS advises bringing pets indoors, covering exposed skin when outdoors, and avoiding the use of space heaters that emit carbon monoxide. Residents should also stock up on essentials and monitor local forecasts for updates on precipitation and travel impacts.
The cold snap will linger through Tuesday, with daytime highs in the low 20s and overnight wind chills below zero. Sunshine returns midweek as temperatures slowly rise into the 30s.
