Albuquerque, NM – Residents across New Mexico should prepare for an active weather pattern this weekend, with critical fire weather conditions and widespread blowing dust expected Saturday. Strong winds and low humidity will create dangerous conditions for wildfires and travel hazards on major highways, including I-40.

According to the National Weather Service, record high temperatures are anticipated Friday in central and western New Mexico, with Albuquerque hitting 62 degrees. However, a wind shift will bring gusts up to 50 mph Saturday, along with dry conditions that could rapidly spread fires. The fire weather watch spans west-central and eastern parts of the state, urging residents to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose items.

Saturday’s blowing dust will significantly reduce visibility, creating hazardous travel conditions on roads like I-40 and I-25. The NWS advises drivers to use caution and monitor local updates. By Sunday, cooler temperatures will arrive, bringing highs near 52 degrees and calm conditions.

Looking ahead, a winter storm may affect New Mexico early next week. Snow showers are possible Tuesday, with temperatures dropping to lows near 20 degrees. Preparations for freezing conditions and potential road impacts are strongly encouraged.
