Springfield, IL – A winter storm is set to blanket central and southeast Illinois with heavy snow and ice starting late Saturday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch, predicting at least six inches of snow across affected regions. Ice accumulation, potentially exceeding one-tenth of an inch, may develop south of Interstate 70. Wind gusts up to 30 mph could cause drifting snow and power outages.

According to the NWS, hazardous conditions will peak late Sunday into Monday morning. Roads, particularly bridges and overpasses, are expected to become treacherous, significantly impacting the Monday commute.

Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel. If travel is necessary, officials recommend packing a winter safety kit with blankets, water, and emergency supplies.

Stay updated on storm developments through official channels and local weather reports. Preparing now can ensure safety during potentially dangerous conditions.
