Lake Charles, LA – A potent weather system will bring severe thunderstorms and a sharp drop in temperatures to Louisiana this weekend. Sunday’s forecast calls for heavy rain and the potential for damaging winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lake Charles, storms are expected to increase in intensity from midday through late afternoon Sunday, January 5. Residents near the I-10 corridor are advised to monitor updates closely as all modes of severe weather remain possible.

In addition to the storms, a strong cold front will sweep through the region Sunday night, sending temperatures plummeting into the 30s. Daytime highs early next week are predicted to stay below 50 degrees, with overnight lows near freezing. NWS notes that this may be the coldest air of the season.

Residents are urged to prepare for the sudden chill by ensuring heating systems are working properly and stocking up on winter essentials such as insulated clothing and blankets. Drivers are advised to check antifreeze levels and tire pressure before traveling during the colder weather.

The extended forecast shows calmer conditions after Monday, with sunny skies returning by midweek. However, sub-freezing temperatures are likely to persist for several nights.
