Kansas City, MO – A major winter storm is expected to hit northern Missouri this weekend, bringing freezing rain, snow, and bitter cold. Forecasters are warning residents and travelers to prepare for hazardous road conditions beginning Saturday night and continuing into Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, light snow is possible today along Highway 36 with minor accumulations. However, the main weather event arrives Saturday night, bringing significant snow and freezing rain to the region. Total snowfall amounts remain uncertain but could reach several inches in some areas.

Saturday will start with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures near 29°F. By evening, a wintry mix is expected, followed by heavy snow overnight. Precipitation will continue into Sunday, when temperatures drop significantly, with a high near 24°F and a low of 4°F. Winds from the north could exacerbate travel difficulties due to drifting snow and reduced visibility.

Residents are urged to secure emergency supplies and stay updated through the weekend. Drivers should check road conditions and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. Major highways, including Interstate 70 and Highway 36, could see delays or closures.

Looking ahead, frigid temperatures will persist into next week, with highs barely reaching the teens on Monday.
