Iowa Residents Should Brace for Weekend Snowstorm: Up to 6 Inches Expected

Omaha, NE – Snow showers blanketed northeast Nebraska and parts of Iowa overnight, creating slick road conditions early Thursday morning. Travelers are urged to check their routes as snowfall continues through mid-morning.

According to the National Weather Service, snow will taper off by 9 a.m., but drivers should remain cautious. Roadways, including sections of Highway 275 and Interstate 80, may still have icy patches due to freezing fog and snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches. Use extra caution, reduce speed, and allow extra time for your commute.

As the storm clears, Thursday afternoon will see mostly sunny skies with temperatures rising to 33°F. Overnight lows will drop to 19°F, with clear skies keeping roads cold and potentially icy into Friday morning.

Looking ahead, another winter storm is forecasted to impact the area starting Saturday afternoon. This system is expected to bring 6 or more inches of snow to eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, particularly along Interstate 80. Winds up to 20 miles per hour will cause blowing and drifting snow, creating hazardous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service advises preparing for delays if traveling this weekend and carrying an emergency kit with blankets, water, and a charged phone. Temperatures will remain frigid, with wind chills between -15°F and -25°F possible by Monday.

Residents should monitor updates from local weather services and plan accordingly to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
