Binghamton, NY – Central New York is under a prolonged lake-effect snow event starting today and continuing through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Heavy snow and gusty winds are expected, particularly in areas north of the New York Thruway, creating hazardous travel conditions.

The NWS reports that snow showers will intensify this afternoon, focusing on Onondaga, Madison, and Oneida Counties. Northern Oneida County could see snowfall rates exceeding two inches per hour, with accumulations reaching up to two feet by Saturday evening. Drivers should avoid nonessential travel in affected areas due to reduced visibility and drifting snow.

Strong westerly winds are expected to persist through Friday, exacerbating blowing and drifting snow. Temperatures will drop further this weekend as Arctic air moves into the region, with highs in the upper 20s and lows dipping into the teens.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Chenango County until 1 p.m. today, and additional warnings may be issued for other areas. Travel disruptions are likely along Interstate 81 and sections of the NY Thruway as snow continues to accumulate and conditions worsen.

Residents are urged to prepare for power outages and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies. For the latest updates, visit weather.gov/bgm and enter your location.

This weekend, even colder temperatures are anticipated, with lake-effect snow bands shifting to cover more of Central New York. The heaviest accumulations will occur Saturday night into Sunday morning, making road conditions treacherous.
