Huntsville, AL – Freezing overnight temperatures are set to grip northern Alabama this week, with lows plunging into the mid-20s starting tonight. Daytime highs will remain in the 40s, but the bitter nighttime chill could pose serious risks to people, pets, and property.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Huntsville, temperatures will drop as low as 25 degrees tonight, with clear skies and light northwest winds. The cold will persist through Saturday, with Friday night expected to be the coldest, hitting 23 degrees. Residents should take immediate precautions, including insulating exposed pipes, checking on vulnerable neighbors, and limiting outdoor exposure for pets.

Daytime conditions will remain dry and sunny through Saturday, with highs ranging from 39 to 50 degrees. A slight warming trend may arrive on Sunday, with highs near 47 and a 50% chance of rain.

Key safety reminders from the NWS emphasize protecting the “Four P’s”: people, pets, pipes, and plants. Insulate outdoor faucets, bring pets indoors, and cover sensitive vegetation before temperatures plummet. Homeowners should also disconnect garden hoses and open cabinets near plumbing to prevent freezing.

Drivers along major roads, including U.S. Highway 231, are urged to prepare for potential frost and reduced visibility in early morning hours. Additionally, a chance of rain Sunday night could make for slick conditions.
