Springfield, MO – A winter storm is expected to sweep across Missouri this weekend, bringing freezing rain, sleet, and snow to many areas. Forecasts indicate hazardous travel conditions on I-44 and other roadways starting Saturday night and lasting through early Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm will arrive Saturday evening with a mix of rain and freezing precipitation. It will peak Sunday as temperatures drop, leading to snow accumulation in some areas. Impacts include icy roads, reduced visibility, and possible power outages. Residents are advised to prepare now by stocking emergency kits and avoiding unnecessary travel during the storm.

Temperatures are forecast to plummet next week, with wind chills below zero possible by Monday. NWS notes this will be the first arctic cold front of the year, following milder conditions earlier this week.

Thursday’s weather will remain calm, with a high near 47 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. However, by Saturday, highs will drop to the upper 30s, followed by lows in the teens by Sunday night. Rain and snow showers are likely, and roads will become treacherous as freezing temperatures persist into Monday.

Key actions to take include bringing pets indoors, dressing in layers to protect exposed skin, and ensuring space heaters are placed safely away from flammable materials. Stay updated on weather changes and plan for delays if traveling.
