Northwest winds are setting the stage for lake-effect snow across northeastern Minnesota and Wisconsin, with accumulations reaching 3 inches in parts of Iron County. Snowfall is expected to taper off by Friday evening, but strong winds will continue to affect the region. Residents are advised to prepare for hazardous road conditions, especially along Highway 2.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, lake-effect snow will develop due to persistent northwest winds. Accumulations will remain light for most areas, but localized snowfall of 2-3 inches is likely near Hurley and Ironwood. Northern Minnesota, including Duluth, can expect flurries today with little to no accumulation.
Temperatures will remain frigid, with highs near 12°F on Thursday and wind chills as low as -14°F. Winds will gust up to 25 mph, creating blustery conditions. Friday will be sunny but cold, with highs near 10°F and gusts of 20 mph. By the weekend, temperatures will rise slightly, but sub-zero wind chills will persist during overnight hours.
Drivers should plan for icy roads and limited visibility, particularly near Lake Superior and inland snowbelt areas. Use caution during commutes and ensure vehicles are winter-ready.
Looking ahead, the forecast suggests calmer conditions by Saturday, with sunny skies and a high of 10°F. However, overnight lows will dip to -2°F.
