Newport, NC – Gusty winds and cooler temperatures are set to arrive in Eastern North Carolina today, marking a shift in the weather pattern for the first week of January. Residents should expect sunny skies with highs near 58 degrees, but wind gusts could reach up to 24 mph, making outdoor activities brisk.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will drop significantly tonight, with lows around 33 degrees under clear skies. Thursday will bring slightly cooler highs, peaking near 50 degrees, accompanied by continued northwest winds up to 16 mph.
The cooling trend will intensify heading into the weekend. Friday will feature sunny skies and highs near 52 degrees, but overnight lows will dip to 26 degrees. By Saturday, temperatures will barely climb to 41 degrees, with frost likely overnight as lows reach 23 degrees. Sunday will remain chilly, with a high near 46 degrees.
Drivers traveling along Highway 70 are advised to use caution, particularly during periods of strong gusts today and Thursday. Residents should prepare for frost on their windshields during early mornings later this week.
